Abstract
Obesity is associated with an increased risk of several diseases, including diabetes, hypertension, stroke, cardiovascular disease, gallstone, and certain type of cancer. The health benefits of weight loss are well known and have been reviewed elsewhere. Many persons expect that weight loss has the positive effects on psychosocial functioning. However, few studies have evaluated the amount of weight loss needed to achieve a significant improvement in health status and the long-term effects of sustained weight loss on health outcome also remained undocumented. And research findings on the psychosocial effects of weight loss lags behind our clinical knowledge and general expectation. Moreover, Many reports about health effects of excessive weight loss and weight cycling showed that even repeated cycling of weight gain and loss, or simply weight loss itself in some degree might be harmful. It is now become clear that lost weight is almost invariably regained. However, overemphasizing obesity¡¯s health risk and pressures on thinness force many people, especially young women and girls to be discontent in their bodies. Many of them are trying to lose weight without proper information about short and long-term effects of weight loss and weight cycling. In this review, through the reviewing the short and long-term physical and psychosocial effects of weight loss and weight cycling, the author will propose the guideline for the good and right dieting.
